Flaky Paint Blues

I hate colder weather...being quite a lazy person I base coat my figures and models using Black Spray Paint. I also am a cheap bugger...hence the use of Paint from work.

Now I also use Tamyia Spray Paint as an overcoat, mainly for my Soviet Vehicles and I have found that this stuff generally works well even into the depths of Winter, However my base Paint hates the cold and will flake off if you don't judge the temperature right.

Here's some examples of that on my Soviet ZIS 3 Guncrew.

Being the fool that I am I continued to paint over the figures in the hope that the enamel would bond the flaking...fat chance, perhaps the only way out of this is to carry out a PVA glue dip then carry on the painting with the PVA acting as a protective skin.

  1. Paul,
Stupid question but did you give your Soldiers a "bath" first? The chemicals left over after they get out of their mold-resin basic training can cause the paint to flake off like that. I'm told to dip them in a mixture of dish detergent and let them soak and then dry. You probably already do this - but I thought I would offer it up.

  2. Hi Steve,
Yep always give them a nice hot bath in Sunlight dish detergent, I just think its the temperature and paint, It was probably down to 3 degrees C when I got round to base painting them and the sun had gone down...doom on me.
Besides the primer was for timber...The Guns were based with the same paint but just after lunch at about 15 degrees C. No probs there.
Cheers for the hint anyway, I ust pushed my luck.
