Plane Month Ki-51 "Sonia" Pt 2

I had a late Parade tonight so I will not beat around the bush with this post and let the photos do most of the talking. Above primer coat of Naval Grey.
Second coat of Flat Black for depth.
Japanese aircraft always seemed well worn in the field, so patches of enamel Aluminium colour.
Apply Marmite onto the patches, If elsewhere you can use Vegemite (YUCK!) or some other yeast extract. You can use salt but I think Marmite does a better job for aircraft of this scale. Trust me on the Marmite.
Spray coat of Japanese Dark Green, or Olive Drab in this case. Set overnight.
The next day wash in warm water and rub the Marmite area's with your fingers removing the Marmite and top coat of paint. This should leave a nice looking worn surface.
Carefully paint the canopy.
Paint the details up, wheels MG's and crew etc. Starting to get there now. Tomorrow Decals and finishing touches.

  1. Well done on finding a use for Marmite. Anything but eat it! I'm not sure about the reference photo in the background of your first pic.

  4. Marmite weathering! Inspirational :)

Like Tim I can't eat it and yes the wife loves it, which results in some rather mean tricks played on me over the years IMHO

  5. Er, its a photo of a Phantom. I'm not sure how much use that'll be to you when painting WW2 Japanese aircraft...
I'm sure you know what you're doing!

Yes canopies are a chore, but need to be done, I try not to obsess over them.
