Gun Month - QF 25 Pounder Batteries

3rd and last post of the night shows what has been the bulk of my weekends work. After getting four of what were 3rd hand already constructed Airfix QF 25 Pounders and Limbers a few months ago I needed to do something with them prior to the end of Gun Month. The freaking cat knocking them off a shelf last week only added to the urgency to get them out of the way...Freaking cat...thinks it owns the show...mutter...mutter
Most of the Guns and Limbers were in reasonable order and needed little to be done to them. All the Guns also came with a Gunner sitting in the Gun Layers seat. This is a bit of a pain as the CD3 set up needs two figures per Gun crew and I was not going to waste my time making single figure stands that I could not use for any other British Artillery fielded. So the end result was these look to have three figure stands but the base only contains two. Above the converted figure has a beret on his nut from the ESCI Quad set.
Two Guns per Battery for CD3 means with my other 25 Pounder (In action at Calais) I almost have a Field Regiment. Decals were from the ESCI 25 Pounder set and are not placed that well due to the scale difference, however they are handy for hiding the sink marks on the shield. Figure at the rear of this piece has been converted by cutting his arm off and placing it a different angle.
The white box markings with the number on the left hand side of the shield are to identify the Gun during a game as to know how much ammunition has been expended etc.
Last Gun of the 2nd Battery with another converted head. I went into town today especially to get some paint for his darn beret, three times this month I have needed a dark blue, I have always been able to get around not having a dark blue up until now.
The two Batteries in line. I am very pleased about the results, even though the Airfix kit is simple compared to the ESCI/Italeri release, it still is value for money to the wargamer. Cannot wait to carry out some 'Stonking' with these babies.

Gun Month - QF 2 Pounder Completion

The 2nd of tonight's posts deals with the QF 2 Pounder hybrid that Al (The beer swilling, cricket mad, bootneck) threw my way. Again as with the D-1 a coat of primer and OD touched up with some weathering sealed the deal.
Unsure of what decaling to apply to this bad boy, but I will complete some research on the net to get some ideas.
Of course the real reason why it has taken so long to finish off is getting crews sorted out. These two are from the Airfix QF 25 Pounder set. The Crews from this set and the QF 2 Pounder, again from Airfix are a war gamers staple for British Artillery gunners. note the figure closest, the gun seat slips under his floating arse.

Gun Month - D1 152mm Howitzer Endgame

Hopefully the first of three posts tonight as I clear the backlog of operations over this long weekend. After a day on the range I settled in last night determined to finish off this Red heavy weight.
A quick primer coat of flat black followed by Olive Drab 2 from Tamiya and a dry brush of earth brought this gun into the finished state.
Crew of two as is the case for Command Decision Three rule sets.
Chuffed to have this one out of the to do list and ready for the table.

IDF Air Force Museum

Spanky Dave just sent me a few pics of a visit to the IDF Air Force Museum. Quote "Pucking awesome. And some smart models. They used the Airfix Afrika Korps for the Israelis and the 8th Army for the naughty Arabs. A puck of a lot more impressive then the Cairo military museum anyway. " Unquote.

Nice one.

HMMWV Doyusha

Last week I failed in a number of auctions I was biding on, which was a little disappointing as a few of them would have been great buys and additions to the horde. However I was lucky to win on a couple of Doyusha (Dragon) HMMWV 1/72 models.
These come premade and pre painted, the only work I had to carry out was to add the .50 Cal mount. Price wise I picked both of them up for $10.00 NZD with free postage so it was a good buy especially as they were brand new.
Welcome additions to my cold war forces.

Gun Month - 2 Pounder Progress

A quick post to show progress on the plastic/metal 2 Pounder hybrid. Friday night means beer...Mmmm beer!

Gun Month - D1 152mm Howitzer

Okay the Box says M-30 122mm, but you get the option to construct the D1 152mm gun. I chose this option as the barrel and breech construction was one piece and I can sometimes be lazy. I brought this about three years ago and it has been in construction for most of that time (remember I can be lazy). I finally finished the building phase tonight and am well pleased that it is completed.
To be honest the kit is a bit of a pig, the plastic is quite brittle, instructions very vague and confusing and fit not so great. It does fill a gap and will be fielded with my Soviets. Would I buy another, you bet, I actually need the M30 122mm more than this beast. On the list for painting this weekend-ish.

Feedback on 4th Coy Tank Regiment

Going though some of the comments from yesterdays post on the T34/85 Company, I noted what Maurice from http://minisfigs.blogspot.com/ said about them. "Maybe a bit of mud on the tracks, wheels and lower hull to make them look 'used'?"
I like to take on board what reasonable fellows have to say, after all I am a big boy now, and have pretty wide shoulders. So I decided to take a few shots of those two Fujimi kits in a different light to show that they do actually have a bit of weathering and crap on them.
Dusting was carried out a few years ago during a all night marathon (There was about 180 kits involved) with my old mate Spanky Dave on the end of a airbrush. The dust of choice is buff. Hope that it can be seen in a better light...so to speak.

4th Tank Coy,1st Tank Regt, Soviet Rifle Division 1943-45

By 1944 a fourth Medium Tank Company was added to a Tank Regiment, so just in time for that is a pair of Fujimi T34/85's.
Nice kits with plenty of decal options. The ZiS-S-53 85 mm gun modeled is certainly more meaty looking than the Airfix optional version.
Comrade Ivan says hi.
Again, the 85mm gun to the fore. Front tread guards removed.

The Battle of Calais:Northern Action

A late post from the action at Calais in September. These photo's concentrate on the northern frontage of the port city. Constant pressure was applied on my Allied forces on this front and while the fighting was quite fierce it did not suck in many of my reserves which was lucky for me as I was very light with these. Above British Infantry with 25mm AT Gun score success against German Armoured Car Recon Units, while British armour in the form of Matilda I's and II's lurk to the rear of the built up area's outflanking the Recon Unit to attack the train of the German forces. British Infantry performed well here although at the end the Germans forced them out.
British 4.5 Artillery performed well as did indeed the RN offshore support and the 25 Pounders. The Truck park of Quads can be seen at the top of the photo. Al commented that the were seated well forward of the edge of battle, this was intentional as with the Germans heavy concentration of armour my Anti Tank capability was needing to be spread as much as possible.
Towards the end of the nights action, with my French Armoured Infantry lines collapsing at the Railway station, it left my 4.5's open on two sides. While I quickly deployed a Company of Brengun Carrier packed with Infantry to retake the French positions before the Germans could reinforce success. I felt I had to uplift my Battery just in case, here the Quads proceed to move the guns in good order into the Citadel.
More action along side the Rail embankment, The British Infantry mount a limited counter attack to retake the railway station to the right of the French on the line...They failed to make much headway but did cause the Germans a even amount of casualties.
The end of the days moves, I draw back my Armour to the centre, while German Infantry advance to seize the positions around the railway station. More info on the Calais front later this week.

3rd Tank Coy,1st Tank Regt, Soviet Rifle Division 1943-45

Second post of the day sees the 3rd Medium Tank Companies assets laid to bare.
Matchbox T34/76 with Fujimi figure. The Matchbox kit looks more boxy and chunky compared to the Airfix model. I must admit to enjoying the construction of these rather than the Airfix version.
Airfix kit. Horrid tracks on this beast, but it looks the part.

3rd Bn Weapons Coy,1st Regt Soviet Rifle Division 1943-45

Getting back to the Soviet steamroller for this post. Today we finish off the 3rd Battalions stands, starting with the 82mm Mortar Platoon. The ESCI pose on the right (Standard for almost all of my Soviet Mortar stands...As I have about 15 of them.) with a Italeri ZIS gunner on the left to bulk out the stand.
Anti Tank Rifle Platoon with converted ESCI gunner.
And of course the two MMG platoons with Maxims.
Might do a few more random posts today, lets see how that turns out.

November is Still Gun Month!

It doesn't rain but it pours. With Gun Month in full swing throughout the world, I was visited by the ole reprobate Al from 20th Century Wargames this week who dropped two guns for me. Spare to his requirements a RAFM PAK-38 and enough pieces of a couple of 2 Pounders to construct one. Top class man, that Al, cheers mate.

November is Gun Month!

As well as the Soviet Forces, over the last few days I have been doing some work on some German Gun Crews as I was pretty thin on the ground with them.
These lot are a mix of Armourfast MG crews and the IG-18 figures from HAT.
I painted these up as SS troops, to go with my early to mid war Regiment.
Matchbox PAK 40, standard AT Gun from mid to late war. I enjoyed painting these up as a change from the Soviet beasties...green on green, oh look more green...darn Russians.

3rd Bn,1st Regt Soviet Rifle Division 1943-45

Leaving armour behind for a wee bit we move on to the 3rd Rifle Battalion which will be the last in this Regimental formation. Typical Soviet Regiments were two Battalions by late 1944 and understrength, so my next Regiment may be just two Battalions. Above a Rifle Company of two Platoons. Mix of Revell, ESCI and Italeri, with the Revell sniper being a nice pose along with the Italeri loader of the DP.
2nd Company of the Battalion, again with the usual mix of figures. The Italeri rifleman on the left is well posed and proportioned.
Third Company with that pesky DP set up by Italeri.
Battalion Command stands. "Comrades, will we ever get tired of pointing our revolvers in the air!"

2nd Tank Coy,1st Tank Regt, Soviet Rifle Division 1943-45

Very quick post tonight as I have been busy painting and shifting things for the cook. 2nd Company consists of the very nice Fujimi T34/76 (1940) models.
Straight forward kits with two options of road wheels, as seen above.
On one of the kits I cut off the front track guards, nice improvement I think.
