Okay, now for a bit of historic licence with tonights second post. Australia retired Centurions in 1977 and they were put into long term storage until 1989 when they were sold to a private Arms Company for disposal.

Given that I want an Australian component to the 1985/6 ANZUKK (Australian-New Zealand-United Kingdom-Korean) task force (Brigade) I am tempted to use the 4 Centurions I have, that have been gathering dust for the 4 or so years since my building them as two Companies for a ANZAC Armoured Bn, with a Leo 1A3 as the Bn HQ track. I have another Leo 1A3 still to build but I am not really in the mood to do it at the present.

My reasoning is this: Aust Govt sells the Centurions to Singapore (They actually still use them at that time) in 1983/4, they are sent to ROK to be upgraded and converted to a Israeli standard by Hyundai Heavy Industries: "Super Centurion". Prior to being shipped to Singapore for service, the balloon goes up and they are offered to Australia for use as Singaporean troops cannot be used in the conflict due to internal strife.

Australia is in the process of sending the 2nd Australian Task Force to the conflict and would use the Leo 1A3 with these guys, while these spare Cents would be used by joint Aust/NZ Armoured corps pers in supporting the secondary ANZUKK element. This would make a light Armoured Battalion along with NZ Scorpions in a Reconnaissance Troop.
I have converted these to 105L7 standard and added .50cal and infrared spotlights, and am quite chuffed with the look of them. All are of course Airfix Centurions.

2 Companies in hull down positions repelling a Red Battalion size attack, with F4 Phantom providing close support.
Sounds plausible enough - I've heard worse excuses for using even more outlandish toys. Out of interest, are the 'red force' carriers in the last photo the old ROCO Hotchkiss Spz11?
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff, it's nice to be able to use models in games that would normally miss out
ReplyDeleteHi Tim yes they are. They look Chinese enough for Al and I.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Very cool and i like the B&W.
ReplyDeleteI have a few Hotchkiss - I use them with 15mm toys - where they look like proper-size APCs!
ReplyDeleteCheers Biff. Sometimes less colour is more kind to the construction.

Red Chinese were the right scale Tim!
ReplyDeleteGood one Paul. I saw a real one of these babies about six months ago. It was seized from a drug dealer and he had it stashed out in the bush. It cost him $60,000.00 to buy.
ReplyDeleteBlooming flip Paul! Speechless...We have about 1/2 a dozen of these in NZ, but none are used by dealers that I know about.
ReplyDeleteWe have had a Mig21 sezied though in Christchurch.
Nice to know you are kept on your toes mate.
Cheers Paul
superb
ReplyDeleteCheers Taio.
