Cheap Glider Wings

When gaming with Al the other night we brushed on the topic of making some gliders for our Airborne forces, after all buying a Horsa Glider down here in 1/72 scale can set you back about 35-40 $NZD, which is way too much for wargaming unless you are Peter Jackson.

So to cut a long story short, I brought a couple of these cheap gliders from a shop the other day to keep the young master quiet for 10 minutes during the school holidays. These have been around since Adam was a cowboy and I can remember getting a few when I was the boys age about 30 years ago.
So during the 2 minute construction phase I could not help but notice that the wings are about the same size an shape as a Horsa.
While this may fit the bill for a DFS 230. No painting required...Just thinking out loud.

  1. And as an added bonus you can actually 'glide' these things onto the table! Well, maybe not - given the potential damage to toys. I bought a box of these recently - I think there may be scope for a 'Kamakazie' game using a big toy aircraft carrier I picked up a few years ago.

  2. I should have known that a master gamer like yourself has already seen the potential in this Tim.

    I stand amazed...Again!

  3. Have you thought about 1/144 models (don't know if there are any out there) or paper ones? Here's a (free) link to a paper DFS230: http://www.paper-avia.com/en/modelz/wars/ww2_t/1246 . The page has several other paper models, a Horsa included. I've seen a couple of these built up in another blog (don't ask which one, can't remember) and they looked quite the part.

  4. I used to use something similar as a nipper to transport my Airfix german paras (attached to the bottom by sellotaping matchboxes underneath) from the bedroom window to the bottom of the backgarden. Most got through the Flak laid on by my brother and a couple of airpistols...great fun :-D
