More Matador Madness

All this work with the Matador rebuild has made me pick a unmade kit from the box and start again. Its probably been five or so years since the last time I built the Airfix kit, and I remember that it was a build of two halves. Some stages good, but then again I seem to recall that the deck and tarp may have been a little tricky.
Stage one, the cab. Relativity simple work, but this example had quite a bit of flash to remove (But since the mold is 49 years old this year I can forgive that). The driver with the M1 US helmet is a mystery, why put him in there? You could always pretend he is a Soviet driver I suppose as the mother country supplied the USSR with a few thousand of them. I used a Airfix driver from the Universal Carrier set instead.
Stage two the deck and tarp. Not as bad as I remember. A good idea is to use superglue here and work piece by piece instead of just wacking two sides on at once. The tarp is shockingly undetailed, and is hard to get just right. I plane to add the rear end of a GMC tarp like with the other Matador to upgrade it.
Stage three are the boxes under the deck and the mud guards. The boxes look a little small, but everything fits well.
Stage four the chassis. The leaf springs are a total pain in the butt. It may have been that I was tired but I kept on dropping them or misaligning them. I eventually used tweezers like I should have done from the start. As I am changing the wheels i left off some of the parts underneath until I get the axles sorted.
Mating of the stages. Again to ensure hassle free fit I used superglue and held it for a minute or so. Much better alignment than the one I made years ago.
Axles with donor wheels from the Airfix Scammell truck. The bigger tyres are needed. If you look at the Matador in the rear of the shot you will see they look too small. swap them if you can.

  1. It's a bit of an oldie, it needs a revamp that mould but good work persevering as usual...I would have launched it in a bit of a temper halfway through!

  2. Nice work on the Matadors. I remember from long ago in my youth making of these up and being annoyed with it being all wonky

  3. Now that kit is a classic, think I built one as a 13 yr old....did not come out as good as yours as I recall...)

  4. Nice work Paul. I have one ready for paint and two more in the stash. As far as the driver and crew for the gun is concerned, take a look at the HaT WWI British arty crew set. I know its WWI, but they look OK. You can even lengthen the trousers with some Elmer's Glue or green stuff and make them even more correct (not that I'll bother).

Airfix should do well to clean up those molds. I bought a kit of the 25lbr the other day that was just horrible as far as sink marks and flash were concerned.

Keep it up. You're shaming us into getting more stuff done.

  6. I do rather like the look of the Scammell wheels on the Matador. If I still have an unbuilt example I'll bear it in mind.

  7. Too true Fran, but its not as bad as trying to put on the tracks of Airfix Panthers or Tigers.

Matador Models do some nice conversions of this kit.

    Cheers Paul

  8. Hi Alan, yes I know mate. I have totally screwed up to many trucks by gluing them then leaving them to set, and finding them wonky.

I use superglue now and hold with force and aligned for two minutes. This mostly has solved slow setting glue creep (SSGC).

  9. Cheers Don, as a 13 year old I think you have an excuse mate!

Even in my forties I can still construct a dog!

  10. Hi Dimitri, the quad does look a mess nowadays. Good idea about the figure as well. The trousers will not be an issue as the lower half is hidden by the cab.

    Cheers Paul

  11. Thanks Erhan, I prefer Matchbox over Aifix, but I think they both compliment each other.

  12. Good one Tim, I have enough spares left for one more after this one.

I must do a Scammell one day, are they as nightmarish as people say?

  13. I think we had this discussion last December! I've never actually built a Scammell, although i do have one in stock and most of another in the bits box. Looks tricky but I'll get round to it...one day....
