Airfix StuG IIIG

As part of my German rebuild/re-firb programme I have come to my StuG Battery. I built these around eight years ago and while the scheme was fair, they all needed a touch up and some finishing off.
The Airfix 75mm Assault gun is one of the brands better kits, and considering the kit is going on 50 years it has stood the test of time very well. A little flash, mainly on the wheels, a rather delicate gun and of course the infamous vinyl tracks. To be fair these are not as bad as some of the other tracks found in Airfix kits.
I added the side skirts and made them from plastic card.
To make them a little more individual I attached a ditching log and large wooden crate. No MG comes with the kit which is a little silly.
Foliage from the usual sources.
If the barrel looks a little droopy, thats my fault as I broke it and left the repair to superglue rather than replacement.

Two more to come, so model on!

  1. Really like what you have done with this kit Paul. The damage on the side skirt looks very effective too.

    1. Thanks Rodger.

The damage was created by punching a nail into the plastic then twisting it around a bit.

  2. I've got a couple of these in my bits box. I like them, except for the barrel which I think is much to thin. I've always meant to do something about them, replace the barrels and tart them up a bit, with, as you say, the missing machine gun and some other details. But I never get around to it really.

    1. Oh come on Laffe, do get stuck in. Very true about the barrel. You could always take off the shield, cut down the gun to the early version, and you would be set.

      Model on

  4. Great post Paul. I agree that the StuG is still a good kit - its only real weak point (in every sense!) is the gun barrel.

    1. Tim, Its good to see that I am not the only one who thinks that the barrel is dodgy.

I had to repair two of my three barrels, and am becoming quite skilled at this action.
